Sterre Elisabeth Mokken
Co-ordinating Researcher / MD/PhD-candidate at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam.
The GenderAid and all the studies involved are part of my PhD-dissertation: “Shared Decision-Making in Genital Gender Surgery (The GenderAid).“
The aim of this initiative is to implement developments for, and by, the community in order to improve the quality of gender care. his research was driven by motivation to give the word back to the community, because an education is simply not comparable to actual life experience. For this reason, I have been involved in research within the (surgical) world of gender dysphoria since the start of my medical studies.
The focus of my research have been on the development and evaluation of new surgical techniques and improving genital gender care by the creation of a novel interactive decision aid; The GenderAid.

Research Assistant at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam
In my opinion, medical care is best when it is patient-centered. In order to achieve this, the perspective other than that of the physician is essential. What appeals to me in this research, is the close collaboration between the community and the diverse care team. I think it is very valuable to combine knowledge of qualitative research methods and the experiences of patients in order to deliver accessible information.

Kushal Adyee Banwari
Research intern at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam
I am a Master of Medicine Student at the VU University Amsterdam. I am currently undertaking my research internship. I chose this internship because of my interest in Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery. In addition to my interest in the profession, the doctor-patient relationship is very important to me. In the research ‘shared-decision making in genital gender surgery’ I can focus well on the development of my competences as a future doctor. I hope to learn as much as possible from the various disciplines within the research.

Drs. Yoshita Jagernath
Medical Doctor / Research Intern at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam.
After graduating as a physician, I decided to broaden my interest in the improvement of quality of care. For this reason, I started the Master ‘Health Care Management’ at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. In this research, I can apply my knowledge as a physician and as a health care manager in a large multidisciplinary team committed to providing the best care. It is a challenge to bring together the different perspectives of caregiver, manager, and patient. However, it is great to see that we are able to make great strides in this process.

Drs. Müjde Özer
Plastic Gender Surgeon at The BovenIJ Hospital, Amsterdam/ Medical Sexuologist / Board Member of the ESSM and the NVVS/ PhD- Researcher at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam
I have worked as a plastic surgeon with a subspecialty in gender surgery and sexual well-being since 2012. I believe that genital care is fundamental, as form, function, and sexual pleasure are intertwined. Careful attention, knowledge, and dedication is essential. For this reason, I am also a board member of 'The European Professional Association of Transgender Health' and am closely involved in frequent research and guidelines. Moreover, I am now completing my PhD research on sexual well-being after genital surgery.

Dr. Tim van de Grift
Psychiatrist in Training/ Medical Sexuologist / Post-doc Researcher at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam
I believe it is important to conduct quality research on topics that matter to patients. My personal interest is in topics at the intersection of body, mind and society. Especially, in research for transgender care and its outcomes, this broad view is of great importance. During my research, I learn a lot from the transgender community: How is care and research experienced? What are the needs of the community? And how do we collaborate while doing everyone's experience justice?

Prof. Dr. Margriet Mullender
Professor the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam
"It is especially satisfying when clinical research leads directly to better care."
I supervise a team of enthusiastic researchers who study and innovate transgender care from a practical perspective. Valorization forms the core of my teachings; knowledge of development in close cooperation with stakeholders, and its’s direct application in practice. With the development and (inter)national implementation of outcome measures, quality tools and tools for choice and decision support, this research can have a significant impact on improving the quality of gender surgical care.

Prof. Dr. Mark-Bram Bouman
Plastic Reconstructive Gender Surgeon at the Amsterdam UMC, and the Gender Clinic, Amsterdam
I have been working as a reconstructive gender surgeon at the Amsterdam UMC since 2003. In my experience, a low-threshold approach is crucial, in which the expression of expectations and adherence to mutual respect are central. Furthermore, I am closely involved in new developments within gender care, by means of supervising researchers. By combining research and clinical practice, I hope to make quality surgical care accessible to as many people as possible.

Irene Fritschy
Research Intern at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam.
Since last year, I have been a part of the research team of the project "shared decision-making in genital gender surgery". My main focus was on the exploration of the decisional process for genital surgery. This way we could asses the needs for implementation of the GenderAid. During this research, it was special for me to see how vital patient insight is for improving care. Therefore, I hope to continue to develop and focus on this personalized patient care and its’ implementation in the future.

Imke van Hal
Research Intern at the Dept. of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery at the Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam.
I am currently studying medicine at the University of Utrecht, but because of my interest in transgender care, I approached the Amsterdam UMC for my research internship. Since then, I have been involved in the research 'shared decision-making within genital gender surgery'. What I really like about this research is that I can directly incorporate the feedback from the population into the final product. It is extraordinary to see how involved this community is in improving he quality of gender care.

Dr. Kevin Veen
Medical Doctor / Post-doc Researcher Erasmus MC, Rotterdam
Deciding on the best treatment option can depend on several patient characteristics and personal preferences. Particularly in transgender care, personal preferences must be carefully weighed in order to clarify which option best suits the individual. In my research, I try to develop statistical models that can give tailored advice and provide insight into what the individual deems most important. I also support the department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery of the Amsterdam UMC with epidemiological advice.
